COMPARE BACKENDS

Lovable Cloud vs your own Supabase project

The central difference is where you manage the backend. Lovable Cloud is managed through Lovable; your own Supabase project is under your Supabase account. Choose based on the access and operating workflow you need, rather than assuming a code export requires a backend move.

Compare the operating setup

Backend ownership determines where you inspect configuration and arrange access. It does not by itself prove that an application is secure, compliant, cheaper, or easier to maintain. Those outcomes depend on your implementation and operating practices.

Which one am I using?

Inspect the Cloud settings in your Lovable project. A link to a named project in your own Supabase dashboard is different from managing database tables entirely inside Lovable. The Cloud icon alone does not identify the backend.

Confirm the project identifier with the app’s configuration before making changes. If your team has several Supabase projects, finding one in your account is not enough to prove it is the one serving this app.

When staying may be simpler

If your goal is to keep a source copy, use the download guide. If your goal is a new frontend host, investigate that change independently. Neither requirement automatically justifies copying a database or changing user authentication.

Staying can be reasonable when the current backend meets your needs and you do not want to take on migration work. Write down the specific limitation you are trying to resolve. If there is no concrete limitation, compare the cost of doing nothing with the work of moving.

When moving may solve a real problem

A move can be worth investigating when your team needs direct backend administration, a project under its own organization, or a different integration and deployment workflow. Describe that requirement in observable terms: which setting, connection, or permission do you need?

Check that the destination actually supports the requirement before exporting anything. Also consider who will maintain access rules, provider configuration, backups, and operational checks. More control brings decisions your team must own.

Compare actual costs

Use current vendor prices and your own bills rather than a universal savings claim. Keep application-building charges separate from runtime charges. Include one-time migration effort and any period when both environments must remain available.

Use the same workload and time period for both sides. A quiet prototype and an application with paying customers are not comparable estimates. If usage is uncertain, record the assumption rather than treating the forecast as a quote.

What changes during a move?

Plan the records, authentication, files, application configuration, and integrations together. Keep a record of the source and destination, who can approve a switch, and what must pass before traffic moves.

Read the migration guide for the component checklist and restore considerations. If you want help, describe the outcome you need and whether the app has live users. That is enough to start scoping the work without sharing credentials.
